'But' (dalam bahasa Inggeris) bermakna 'tapi' (dalam bahasa Melayu).
'But' bukan 'verb' (perbuatan) jadi ia digunakan secara sendiri tanpa melibatkan apa-apa objek dan tidak tertakluk kepada sistem masa ('tense').
